Online promotion and sale of “conversion therapy” materials

This project stems from the experiences of survivors who came to No Es Terapia after being subjected to conversion practices in Spain. “Conversion therapies” are practices aimed at changing a person’s sexual orientation and/or gender identity or expression to enforce cis-heteronormative norms. In Spain, “Counselors”/”pseudo-therapists” promote them through books, materials, and services sold on digital platforms.

No Es Terapia identified a digital supply chain: books, guides, and online training materials promoting conversion practices were being marketed and sold in Spain through major digital platforms.

No Es Terapia are preparing a legal strategy to hold platforms accountable for the online promotion, distribution, and sale of materials linked to conversion practices in Spain.

"books, guides, and online training materials promoting conversion practices are being marketed and sold in Spain through major digital platforms"

Strategic Goal

To disrupt the normalisation of conversion practices in digital spaces by increasing scrutiny of how related materials are marketed, categorised, and made accessible through mass commercial channels.

To prompt a structural shift in how digital platforms are held accountable when their services enable the promotion, distribution, and commercialisation of materials linked to discriminatory and harmful practice.

To create a safer digital ecosystem for LGBTI people – one in which conversion practices are not normalised, promoted, or commercially facilitated through major online platforms, and in which the dignity and rights of LGBTI people are treated as enforceable limits rather than optional moderation choices.
