DFF's Jansen Reventlow to receive Riesenfeld Award
The Digital Freedom Fund’s founding director Nani Jansen Reventlow is to be presented with the prestigious 2021 Stefan A. Riesenfeld Memorial Award for her outstanding contribution to the field of international law.
Each year, the Berkeley Journal of International Law invites one preeminent scholar or practitioner to deliver a keynote address at the annual Riesenfeld Symposium.
Organisers cited Jansen Reventlow’s accomplishments in litigating freedom of expression cases in international and national tribunals, as well as her digital rights leadership and advocacy, as reasons for their unanimous decision to honour her with the accolade.
As well as being director of the Digital Freedom Fund, Nani Jansen Reventlow is a recognised international lawyer and expert in human rights litigation responsible for standard-setting freedom of expression cases across several national and international jurisdictions. She is a Lecturer in Law at Columbia Law School and Adjunct Professor at the Blavatnik School of Government, Oxford University.
This year’s Symposium will examine the international right to freedom of expression and how this right intersects with digititalisation and the growth of right-wing nationalism and radicalisation around the world.
The award honours the memory of Professor Stefan A. Riesenfeld, a celebrated scholar who devoted much of his life and career to the study and practice of international law.
Previous recipients of the Riesenfeld Award include David D. Caron, Louise Arbour, Louis Henkin, Philip Alston, Charles N. Brower, and Ivan Velasquez Gomez.
